Item Metadata only College of Environmental Sciences Post Graduate Complex, Bells University of Technology Ota (Preparatory Environment For Life-Work Balance)(Bells University of Technology, 2015-07-12) EGBEYEMI , Olayiwola O,; Dr. Gabriel FadairoIn the construction industry, all professionals work hand in hand, in a process starting from the land surveyor to the architect to the quantity surveyor to the builders and structural engineers. Hence synergy is of importance to help improve teamwork. Also in a learning environment, accommodation is of importance because the student need a place to rest after a hectic day of taking lectures or other various activities. Social activities have always been an integral part of any educational institution throughout the history of mankind. He is therefore required taking part in various form of social and recreational activities since time immemorial.Item Metadata only Drug Rehabilitation Center, Badagry, Lagos State (Architecture As A Tool for Rehabiltation and Resenttlement)(Bells University of Technology, 2016-05-20) AKOLA, Oluwafemi Ebenezer; Arc. Ade ADEWOLUThe worldwide struggle to proffer functional solutions and possible preventive measures to drug/substance abuse and addiction has been going on for ages. Pharmaceutical industries have been on more than a decade long search for a cure for addiction without any major breakthrough, leaving most experts torn between various methods of approaching substance addiction. The orthodox methods of treatment for drug addiction is by the seclusion of the addicts from the society or the combination of both in-patient and out-patient system to aid in wholesome rehabilitation. However, this thesis proposes that architecture can be uses also as a tool to create a controlled environment promoting rehabilitation, resettlement and that also allows for community integration helping to establish a conducive standard for addiction rehabilitation. This is possible because the effects of factors such as sound, light, color, privacy, views, and even smell, texture and finishes can be employed using architecture to promote a healing environment and also psychological healing of drug addicts. Ultimately, this thesis introduces the concept of an integrated community rehabilitation and wellness centre in one of the most notorious urban environments in Western Nigeria, Badagry. The city in popular for being a major settling point for drug smugglers, largely due to its proximity to the Seme Border. The idea is to demonstrate that a healing environment can be enhanced using architecture and natural environment as a tool for reconnecting inhabitants with their environment and ultimately, rediscovering themselves.Item Metadata only Farmer' Market Lusadai (Architectural Journey to Increase Food Supply)(Bells University of Technology, 2016-06-07) OLANREWAJU, Oluwatomini; Arc. Kunle Ayo-VaughanIn order to understand the reasons for food shortage, research was carried out to determine the factors and areas that cause food loss Some of these factors are; farms being too far from the market, farmers have little or no infrastructure for storing harvested crops, the crops harvested stay too long in the barns, get infested by rodents rendering them inedible thereby creating a loss for the farmers, to name a few. By doing this, the major areas needed to be addressed were outlined. The research gathered was done by the primary and secondary method of collection of data, carrying out case studies and visiting the aforementioned case studies. From the research carried out and information gathered, it shows that there is a lack of efficient preservation and storage of food practices which leads to the colossal food losses. It is the view of this thesis that to efficiently reduce wastage and spoilage of food, a storage facility should be adopted which will strategically reduce food wastage and spoilage while increasing circulation of fresh foods, This is because fresh food, grains and other food stuff needed for consumption would be available regularly all year round.Item Metadata only Interchange Transport Hub, Toll- Gate, Ogun state: (Proffering an Architectural Solution to Traffic Congestion)(Bells University of Technology, 2016-06-08) LAWAL, Sulaiman Ayodeji; Arc. Kunle Ayo-VaughanPublic transportation in Nigeria as well as many other developing countries is rapidly losing its value and function. Environmental pollution and traffic crisis on our roads have heightened awareness of the need for a better public infrastructure for transportation. People are pretty much married to their cars nowadays and the only reason for not divorcing them is the lack of an efficient public transportation. Thus, this leads to a large amount of cars plying our roads at the same time, which in turn results into an insurgent amount of traffic congestion. In present time, multiple accidents are being recorded on our roads daily and the death toll caused by these fatalities are ever increasing. To curb this menace, the idea is to design an interchange transport hub that can serve as the intermediary between usage of privately owned cars and public transport. It would also serve as a station to achieve the goals of integrated public transport services. The proposal would be more of an architectural rather than an urban project. This will bear in mind the current situation as well as the future with appropriate planning consideration. The site chosen is a strategic location which also serves as the boundary between Ogun and Lagos states, thus making it fit the perfect billing for this thesis project. So, In essence, this thesis will dissect traffic congestion issues broadly in Ota, where travel is dominated by the automobiles. It would ultimately argue for the need of implementing an interchange transport hub to aid the transportation system. When realized, a prototype design would be established for Ota which can then be employed in strategic locations all over the country where transportation solution to traffic congestion is crucial, in order to encourage people to employ the use of public transportation, as the greener choice of mobility.Item Metadata only Information Market Centre Lekki Lagos State: (Architecture As a Tool for Public Enlightenment)(Bells University of Technology, 2016-06-09) TAIWO, Tolulope Andrew; Dr. Gabriel FadairoNigeria is by far the most populated country in Africa blessed with a large reserve of human resources with over 150 million inhabitant and the population is projected to reach 221 million in 2020 a figure that will make Nigeria rank amongst the highest populated countries in the world. This huge population of our country is there for largely responsible for the increase in unemployment rate because a majority of our skilled labor are seeking white collar job which are not available. The scarcity of job in the country is severely affecting the growth of the country and standard of living of the general public particularly the lower class. A lack of adequate creation to cope with the increasing population is a major cause of this unemployment problem graduates now sit at home doing nothing because of lack of opportunity to practice what they learned in school. For this reason the ministry of education has included entrepreneurial study in the curriculum of secondary schools to prepare the upcoming generation for entrepreneurship but this is not enough because many of the unemployed graduates are already out of school system and can't be covered. This creates the need for a system to be put in place where the disadvantaged public can be educated for the current global conditions. The thesis presents a solution to this problem in the form of a building structure that is dedicated to the cause of education of the disadvantaged public. The projects highlights how architecture can be used to solve problem by creating a space where the people in possession of knowledge can educate those without knowledge and generate revenue in the process.Item Metadata only Information Market Centre Lekki Lagos State: (Architecture as a Tool for Public Englightenment)(Bells University of Technology, 2016-06-09) TAIWO, Tolulope Andrew; Dr. Gabriel FadairoNigeria is by far the most populated country in Africa blessed with a large reserve of human resources with over 150 million inhabitants and the population is projected to reach 221 million in 2020 a figure that will make Nigeria rank amongst the highest populated countries in the world. E. Ayo-VaughanChildren are a huge part of the society. In Nigeria today, the Government has put in effort towards providing affordable education to less privileged children, in a bid get them off the streets. The problem still remains because, needless on quantity over quality. The current learning environments may not impact into lives of the children, and it is only a matter of time before they go back to the streets. The idea that students must be seated at desks working in rows is quickly becoming archaic, as technology, creativity and collaborative work environments are changing the designs of learning spaces. Experts hope that the emerging paradigm will translate into improved learning spaces and influence future architectural design. This project is aimed at boosting the quality of educating children within improved learning spaces influenced by architectural philosophies. Asides data got through primary and secondary means in the literature review, case studies were carried out as well as a survey using questionnaires to understand the psychology of children in relation to their learning spaces.Item Metadata only Cultural Centre Ota:An Architectural Exposition of Hybrid Cultures(Bells University of Technology, Ota, 2016-07) ADESINA, Damilola Omusi; Arch. E.A. Ayo-VaughanThe thesis focuses on embracing the history and culture of the indigenous Ota people and uniting the growing population through the design of desirable spaces. The major research consideration for the project resides in creating an exposition of the Hybrid culture within the Ota region of Ogun State, Nigeria. The research was necessitated because of the ever-growing population: a lack of awareness amongst the growing population, of the newly evolving culture of the environment in which they reside. An analysis of the Ota Culture and its development forms the background for the research, starting with an identification of the general nature of the culture in Ota, Ogun state and narrowing down to the predominant culture of the larger group (Yoruba) that occupy the region. Identifying their elements, symbols and significant signs that form their culture in a bid to generate a suitable design. It is this new identify that the people of Ota would hopefully accept and identify with through the use of architecture. To celebrate this newly evolving cultural community, a cultural center is proposed.Item Metadata only Farmers' Market Lusada(Bells University of technology, Ota, 2016-07-10) OLANREWAJU, Oluwatomini; Arc. Dr. Michael B. O. AdegbileNigeria is the most densely populated country in Africa with 178.5 million people in 2014. Among them, more than 20 million people live in Lagos. That makes it one of the most densely populated cities in the world. in recent years Nigeria has been unable to provide decent and affordable dwellings for its citizens. This is because of spontaneous rise in population and mismanagement of resource. In most urban areas in Nigeria, almost 75% of the dwellers live in conditions that are very unhealthy and harmful to humans. The storage of these housing units have resulted in overcrowding, homelessness, high crime rate, inadequate infrastructure, unhealthy living conditions and several social vices. The cost of conventional building materials are also increasing making private sector and the government to seek alternative ways of building materials locally. This is in order to meet the needs of the rising population and housing deficit. This study emphasizes the sustainability of these materials using data from primary and secondary sources. It is also to highlight how the combination of composite materials and indigenous methods can be used in construction to achieve low-cost sustainable residential housing so as to reduce the housing deficit.Item Metadata only Old Peoples Home Badagry, Lagos: Housing for the Aged Pensioners(Bells University of Technology, Ota., 2016-10-28) ALABI, Adeyanju Samson; Dr. Micheal B. Mrs. OkeyinkaEnergy efficiency in buildings is one of the fundamental steps towards reducing the agents/factors that could lead to global warming and climate change. It is a common knowledge that global warming is becoming more severe universally and poses very big risk to man. Influx to the urban centre has caused uncontrolled growth, overpopulation, clustered environment. elimination of natural elements; lakes, streams, trees, clean air. Bioclimatic design is an important strategy toward achieving sustainable building. Through the implementation of bioclimatic concept in buildings, energy demand can be reduced leading to increased users satisfaction. The modern world building scene tends to depend more and more on the economic climate as well as the geographical climate itself, as none of the major players in the construction game can afford to ignore current conditions and dismiss logical solutions that can drastically cut the impact on the environment as well as the exploitation costs. A mixed-use development is a real estate project with planned integration of some combination of retail, office, residential, hotel, recreation or other functions. It is pedestrian-oriented and contains elements of a live-work-play environment. Mixed-use developments are characterised by their 'live-work-play' facilities and amenities in a single development. Individuals and families can choose housing options for short and long term accommodation: commercial establishments are available for shopping or working; and services and amenities are accessible for recreation and entertainment. On the face of it, there are numerous benefits for mixed-use: the need for transport and infrastructure is optimised; it increases walkability as daily activities are brought closer together; and it enhances social networks when opportunities for chance face-to-face meetings are increased.Item Metadata only Core Competence and Competitive Advantages: A Stage of Pharmaceutical Industry in Lagos State, Nigeria.(Bells University of Technology, Ota., 2019-03-05) OLAFENWA, Abiodun Taiwo; Dr. Okafor L. O.FakoladeCommunity life is closely connected with an understanding of relaxation with the urge for another vitalizing influence, beside the job and the family - an influence capable of expanding man's narrow private existence. Community spaces play an important role in the success of a city and its inhabitants. They become the foundation to which those living and visiting in the area come together and communicate. No great civilization has existed which has not fulfilled man's irrepressible longing for institution where such broader life can develop. Catering to the human needs of a community - physical, psychological, whatever - is an important aspect that needs to be focused on in the country. If places are indeed a fundamental aspect of existence in the world, if they are source of security and identity for individuals and for groups of people, then it is important that the means of experiencing, creating, and maintaining significant places are not lost. It is common knowledge in most if not all Nigerian towns, no conscious and determined effort has been made in providing the citizens a civic facility capable of generating a belonging in them, the situation is not different in Oyo town. This thesis examines the need for a civic center as a control point and natural rendezvous for citizens and as the same time to revive the disappearing cultural identity and the weak connection between the culture and its peopleItem Metadata only Model Housing Complex, Lekki Lagos: A Design Proposal(Bells University of Technology, 2019-07-12) AJIBODUN, Muyiwa Adebayo; Dr. AdewoluIn a world with an increasing urban population and housing need, understanding how built environments can facilitate convivial living becomes an issue. This approach help provide individuals with answers surrounding satisfaction, hence serves as key design clement that are flexible and adaptive. Since the research focusing on promoting conviviality through architecture, few existing housing estate in Lagos Island were reviewed as case studies. This was undertaken to identify both built and natural forms that users of a built environment easily associate with as regards function and identity. An important point to note is that, housing community should be beyond housing the rich, but rather to provide options and opportunities for people to improve their living condition and be satisfied. The research thus offers options aiming to understand how people's self-representation of social inclusions can be translated in design capable of accepting and adapting to change base on purpose.Item Metadata only Skill Acquistion Centre Ojo; Lagos: Engaging The Community Youths Through Architecture(Bells University of Technology, 2019-08-04) OMOJOLA, Taiye Ige Odion; Dr. Olufemi FakoladeSkill or Trade learning has been from the beginning of time, as learning is a never ending process but the ability to make a skill profitable is dynamic .
