Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Badagry : Enchancing Recovery Through Biophilic Architecture In Nigeria

The connection between human psyche and nature is nature in usually not taken in to consideration in the design of most rehabilitation centers in Nigeria, if the core objective of rehabilitation is to be achieved, this trend needs to be urgently addressed. It is against this background that this study seeks explore the effectiveness of biophilic design. The study explores nature as therapy through architecture in drug rehabilitation. Given the interplay between human connectedness to nature and well-being. The study seeks to bring to fore that the physical environment, consciously or unconsciously, has an effect on the psyche, which simultaneously affects one's perceptions of that physical reality. In this work, the interchange between the physical and mental realms were explored in the light of spatial analysis and biophilic design. In looking at how the physical environment effects psychological, the spatial organization inside and outside the counselling room were analyzed within the context of a natural setting. The research concludes that architecture is an important approach to therapy in drug rehabilitation and the environment, which can play a big role in therapeutic outcome. Althught not a form of treatment architecture can significantly become part of the recovery ng proves through the creation of spaces that foster and provide meaning to those activities utilized to achieve gradual rehabilitation through a therapeutic environment light, color and movement within a facility as well as landscape and location are essential elements of this Architectual therapy.
