dc.description.abstractNigeria is the most densely populated country in Africa with 178.5 million people in 2014. Among them, more than 20 million people live in Lagos. That makes it one of the most densely populated cities in the world. in recent years Nigeria has been unable to provide decent and affordable dwellings for its citizens. This is because of spontaneous rise in population and mismanagement of resource. In most urban areas in Nigeria, almost 75% of the dwellers live in conditions that are very unhealthy and harmful to humans. The storage of these housing units have resulted in overcrowding, homelessness, high crime rate, inadequate infrastructure, unhealthy living conditions and several social vices. The cost of conventional building materials are also increasing making private sector and the government to seek alternative ways of building materials locally. This is in order to meet the needs of the rising population and housing deficit. This study emphasizes the sustainability of these materials using data from primary and secondary sources. It is also to highlight how the combination of composite materials and indigenous methods can be used in construction to achieve low-cost sustainable residential housing so as to reduce the housing deficit.
