Abstract

Building maintenance has been an issue within the built profession thereby leading to searches on the best and effective strategies that will be employed to elongate and preserve span of public facilities. Therefore, the research aimed at examining the maintenance strategies employed in selected public buildings in Lagos, Nigeria. Case study and questionnaire analysis were used together data on the strategies implemented in the selected areas for maintenance. The questionnaire was administered to both workers and quest of the public building. The findings from study showed that the major factors hindering maintenance of public buildings include management issues and financial constraints of which the most used types of maintenance strategy are corrective, preventive and emergency, whereas literature has it documented that the most effective maintenance strategy is the preventive measure. Conclusively, the maintenance in the study recommend that government and stakeholders should be adequately involved in the maintenance process of public buildings, this will help to make the building more efficient and produce optimum performance.
