Impact of Emerging Technologies on Urban Transportation Systems in Lagos Island, Nigeria.

Lagos Island, situated in Nigeria's largest metropolis, faces significant transportation challenges due to persistent traffic jams, a deficient public transportation system, the internet of things (IoT), Artificial intelligence (AI), Electric Vehicles (EVs), Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), and intelligent infrastructure. The study was conducted using questionnaires with sampled interviews of commuters, transporters, and staff of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and Lagos State Traffic Management (LASTMA).Descriptive Statistics platforms like Uber, Bolt, Gokada, GPS, an intelligent traffic monitoring system, Lagos Connect MI fare cards, Integrated Mobility Platforms (IMP), data analytics, and AI were not the most popular emerging technologies in urban transportation systems in the study area. Most respondents (53.2%) preferred BRT as their preferred urban transport method, while only 40 out of 109 preferred LAG Ride. The study's finding reveals that the impact of emerging technologies on urban transportation in Lagos Island was seen as excellent by 62.4% of the sampling population. In comparison, 20.2% and 9.2% believed it was fair and poor, respectively. Most (64.2%) respondents' rate current urban transportation in Lagos Island fairly, while 25.7% see it as excellent. There is also the availability of policy guidelines regarding travel information in Lagos Island, but 31.2 % are not aware of any policies. The safety and security of urban transportation in Lagos Islan d is fair by 50.5% of respondents, while 47.7% find modern urban transportation fairly accessible. The survey indicated that 31.2% of the sampling population is satisfied with the emerging technology in urban transport in Lagos Island, while 11.9% are delighted.
