Design of a Proportional Integral Derivative Based Level Controller of a Blending Tank in Cement Plant
(Bells University of Technology, 2020-06-03) AINA, Oluwatosin Adeola; Dr. A. O. Amole
Rotary klin is the heart of the cement plant, and consistent feeding of material into it is key to achieving excellent performance in terms of equipment reliability and profitability. one of the significant ways to accomplish this is by using an appropriate PID Controller to control the level of the material in the klin feed blending tank. The use of PID controller has been severally applied tom the control of the level. However, the major challenges has to do with high overshoot and steady-state error, prolong settling time .and slow response of the controller, which practically will cause wastages and equipment downtime. Thus, this research focused on using PID controllers turned by Zigler-Nichols (ZN), Chien-Hrones-Reswick (CHR), and Cohen -Coon (CC) tuning technique to achieve optimum performance of the level control. The level of the blending tank was modeled based on the mass balance principle. The control schemes were simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK version 9.7.01190202(R2013b), and the performance of each tuning technique was evaluated using the rise time, settling time, peak amplitude, and overshoot. The results revealed that ZN tuned PID controller resulted in the lowest rise time (2.11s), settling time of 14secs, and peak amplitude of 1.04 while both CHR and CC PID achieved the lowest overshoot of 0%.
